In 1883 the Canadian Pacific Railway named McLean after one of its employees,
William J. McLean. It was prior to the completion of the railroad track
in this area when the CPR hired over 300 men to obtain sand from the hills
near the town site for use on the railway bed. Later, Mr. McLean was in
command of the Hudson's Bay Company trading posts at Fort Qu'Appelle, Ile
a la Crosse and Fort Pitt. It was at Fort Pitt in 1885 that Mr. McLean distinguished
himself during the Northwest Rebellion, allowing himself and his family
to be taken hostage by Big Bear's band, in order that the Northwest Mounted
Police detachment might escape. The McLean family remained prisoners for
many weeks before they were able to escape. Mr. McLean later served as an
inspector for the Department of Indian Affairs. It is for this brave Saskatchewan
pioneer that our village is named. |
